Why the ICF Mentor Coaching Specialization?

Mentor coaching is more than an eligibility requirement for credentialing — it is a cornerstone of a coach's developmental journey. It offers a structured, formative  evaluation of coaching skills over time, rather than a one-time summative assessment,  providing a more holistic view of a coach's growth and competence.

ICF defines mentor coaching as a collaborative process where coaches receive feedback  based on observed sessions to refine their skills and style in alignment with the ICF  Core Competencies. In practice, it provides a safe and supportive environment where coaches receive clear, constructive, and actionable feedback —deepening skill mastery  session by session.

Why the ICF Mentor Coaching Specialization?

The MCS was co-created with mentor coaches to establish a clear benchmark for  mentor coaching preparation and practice worldwide. It is grounded in the ICF Mentor  Coaching Competencies — introduced in 2024 after two years of dedicated research -  and validates a mentor coach's training in observing coaching behaviours, integrating  insights against credential-level criteria, and co-creating developmental plans  with clients.

Elevate Rigour & Consistency

Standardised training, specialization, and documentation for mentor coaching practice globally.

Embed Formative Evaluation

Formative evaluation as the primary method for validating coaching skills over time.

Promote Equitable Feedback

Culturally and linguistically responsive feedback that improves the fairness of skill evaluation.

Ensure Transparency

Quality assurance in the selection of a mentor coach to support candidate development.

Practice-Based Developmental Learning

Participants engage directly with real coaching conversations, supported by structured calibration and faculty guidance. You will develop the ability to observe coaching with precision, distinguish between levels of performance, and deliver feedback aligned with ACC and PCC standards - building skill through direct experience, not theory alone.

Developing the Mentor Coach as Practitioner

This programme develops more than technical accuracy. Attention is given to how you are present as a mentor coach - holding a stance that enables learning, reflection, and growth in the coaches you serve. The result is a practitioner who can support others with clarity, integrity, and confidence.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of the programme, participants will be able to:

Accurately evaluate coaching practice at ACC, PCC and/or MCC levels using ICF credential-level markers
